Rant of the day:
The American psyche is so fucked. We have this romanticized notion of the individual. It’s part of our history: the cowboy, the pioneer, the explorer. Except it’s a fucking fairytale. This fetishization of American exceptionalism doesn’t help either. We’ve been told we’re great just because, yet no one spouting that inane rhetoric neither bothers looking at our past nor at our present. We spent a better part of the 20th century realizing that there was no weakness in taking care of each other. And then Bush fulfilled Reagan’s dream and we’ve now decided that placing the needs of those who have the most above those that have the least is not only the best policy, but is somehow morally preferable. The hero to be emulated used to be the person who worked hard, supported their family, and succeeded. Now it’s the venture capitalist that makes a quick buck, regardless of who it affects. It’s why this upcoming election is going to prove so crucial. In a way we are being asked what kind of country we want to be through the nominee we vote for. Who we want to emulate most. Obama may be deeply imperfect, but when compared to the amorphous blob of moral convictions and deification of the wealthy that is Mitt Romney, I hope this country decides that we need to keep going with the former.
Video from The Rachel Maddow Show where she documents the President’s endorsement of marriage equality, his Administration’s historic record on LGBT rights, and Republicans’ ever increasing and endlessly horrifying homophobia.
She is serving some educated perspective realness right here.
An absolute must watch for supporters and cynics alike.
“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

This Congressional Republican budget is something different altogether. It is a Trojan Horse. Disguised as deficit reduction plan, it is really an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country. It is thinly-veiled Social Darwinism. It is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity and upward mobility for everybody who’s willing to work for it — a place where prosperity doesn’t trickle down from the top, but grows outward from the heart of the middle class. And by gutting the very things we need to grow an economy that’s built to last — education and training; research and development; our infrastructure — it is a prescription for decline.

Preach, Mr. President. Preach.

But despite the spirited battle between Mitt Romney and a succession of challengers, turnout as a percentage of the eligible voting population is down, and the states where turnout is up are often those that allow Democrats and independents to vote in Republican contests.
Analysts said that Mr. Romney has had particular trouble energizing urban and suburban voters — typically moderates and swing voters — who would be vital to him against Mr. Obama. Less-than-robust turnout in the primaries from those areas in states like Florida and Michigan, analysts said, suggests a challenge for Mr. Romney in energizing independents and the less conservative components of the Republican electorate.
In other news, due largely in part to the Right’s war on women, President Obama has opened a comfortable lead in key swing states over Mittens Romney.
Before getting a prescription for Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs, men would have to see a sex therapist, receive a cardiac stress test and get a notarized affidavit signed by a sexual partner affirming impotency, if state Sen. Nina Turner has her way.

I’m just going to leave this here.
